Best Pump for a Municipal Backup Water System – A Homeowner’s Guide

When installing a municipal backup water system for your home, choosing the right pump is crucial. The pump controls your water pressure, flow rate, and reliability during supply interruptions.

At AquaVula, we often recommend a 0.75kW booster pump for residential houses, but the right choice depends on your home’s layout, water usage, and budget. This guide will help you choose the best pump for your water backup system.

0.75kw Booster pump recommended by Aqua Vula

1. Decide How Much Water Pressure You Need

Your pump needs to deliver enough pressure for your household’s daily activities.

  • Standard homes: A 0.75kW pump is ideal for most single-family homes, providing strong, consistent pressure for showers, taps, and appliances.
  • High-demand homes: Larger properties or homes with luxury fittings may require a higher-capacity pump to avoid pressure drops.

💡 Tip: Search for “best booster pump for home water pressure” to compare models before buying.

2. Consider Flow Direction and Head Height

Head height refers to the vertical distance water must travel from the tank to the furthest outlet.

  • Single-storey houses: Lower head height means you can use a smaller pump.
  • Double-storey houses: Higher head height requires a pump with more power to maintain pressure upstairs.
  • Long pipe runs: Distance also affects performance – the further the water must travel, the stronger the pump needs to be.

3. Number of Users and Simultaneous Demand

Think about how many taps, showers, or appliances will run at the same time.

  • Small households: A smaller pump will be enough.
  • Larger families: You may need a pump with a higher flow rate to avoid weak water pressure during peak times.

4. Costs, Efficiency, and Maintenance

When comparing pumps for municipal water backup:

  • Upfront cost: A quality pump may be more expensive initially but will save money in the long run.
  • Energy efficiency: Choose a pump that balances power with low electricity usage.
  • Maintenance: Opt for brands with local support and easily available spare parts.

5. Noise and Build Quality

If your pump is near living spaces, look for a quiet booster pump. Stainless steel and corrosion-resistant components will ensure it lasts longer, even with frequent use.

6. Load Shedding and Backup Power

In South Africa, power cuts are common.

  • Bypass valve: Lets you switch to direct municipal supply if your pump can’t run.
  • Generator or inverter compatibility: Some pumps can run on alternative power sources to keep water flowing during outages.

✅ AquaVula Recommendation: For most homes, a 0.75kW booster pump offers the perfect balance between cost, efficiency, and performance – but always match your pump to your property’s needs.

Choosing the Right Pump for Your Water System: A Practical Guide

When installing a water backup system or rainwater harvesting setup, selecting the right pump is critical to ensuring consistent pressure, efficient flow, and long-term reliability. There are several types of pumps available, each suited to different needs. Here’s a breakdown of the main types and what to consider before making your choice.

🔹 Common Types of Water Pumps

  1. Submersible Pumps
    • Installed inside the tank or water source
    • Ideal for clean water or deep tanks
    • Quiet operation and energy efficient
    • Often used for household pressure systems
  2. Centrifugal Pumps
    • Installed outside the tank
    • Pulls water into the system using centrifugal force
    • Great for shallow water sources and general transfer
    • Typically used for irrigation or rainwater reuse
  3. Booster Pumps
    • Increases water pressure from an existing low-pressure source
    • Ideal for properties with municipal water pressure issues
    • Can be combined with backup tanks or used standalone
  4. Multistage Pumps
    • Delivers high pressure through multiple impellers
    • Great for multistory homes or commercial use
    • Quieter and more efficient at maintaining steady pressure

🔍 What to Look Out for When Choosing a Pump

  • Water Usage Needs
Consider how many taps, toilets, or irrigation points the pump needs to supply. More usage = higher flow rate and pressure required.
  • Head Height (Pressure)
The vertical distance the pump must push water affects performance. A higher “head” requires a more powerful pump.
  • Power Supply
Check if the area has single-phase or three-phase electricity. Some rural or industrial areas may need specialised pump setups.
  • Noise Level
Pumps near living spaces should be quieter. Submersible and multistage pumps tend to be the best in this regard.
  • Durability and Brand Support
Go for trusted brands with good local support and service options. Pumps with stainless steel components tend to last longer.
  • Pump Controller Integration
A good controller can prevent dry running, protect against pressure loss, and extend the pump’s life.

✅ Final Tips

At AquaVula, we help you choose the right pump for your specific setup—whether it’s for a backup municipal system, harvested rainwater, or irrigation. Every site is different, and the wrong pump can lead to poor performance or premature failure.

What Size Water Tank Do You Need? Here’s What to Consider Before You Install

So, you’ve decided to install a municipal backup system or a rainwater harvesting tank — great move. But how big should the tank be? 500 litres? 2,500 litres? 10,000 litres?

The right tank size isn’t just about how much space you have — it’s about how much water you need, how often water is available, and how you plan to use it. Here are 5 key things to consider before choosing your tank:

1. 🧍‍♂️ How Many People Are Using the Water?

As a rule of thumb, a single person uses between 100–150 litres of water per day. That includes flushing, washing, and basic use. For a family of four, that’s about 400–600 litres daily.

If you want to last a 3-day outage without running dry, a 1,500–2,000 litre tank is often the sweet spot.

2. 🏠 What Will the Water Be Used For?

Are you just looking to keep toilets flushing during an outage? Or do you want to run showers, laundry, and dishwashers too?

  • Toilets & basic use only? Smaller tanks (500–1,000L) may work.
  • Full-house backup? You’re better off with 2,500L and up.

3. 🌧️ Are You Storing Municipal Water or Rainwater?

  • Municipal backup tanks need to store just enough to get you through a few days.
  • Rainwater harvesting tanks benefit from being as large as your space and budget allow — especially during rainy months.

We’ll help calculate your catchment potential based on your roof size and rainfall.

4. 📦 How Much Space Do You Have?

Larger tanks take up more space, so we’ll consider where you want the tank placed:

  • Ground level?
  • Next to the house?
  • Hidden behind a wall?

Slimline and vertical options are available for tighter spaces.

5. 💰 What’s Your Budget?

Bigger tanks cost more — but they also give you more independence. We can help balance budget with practicality, and even install multiple smaller tanks connected together if needed.
